Why is my check engine light flashing on? Here are some of the common reasons

Jake’s Auto Repair • 8 May 2023

An illuminated check engine light doesn’t necessarily mean that your engine is on the cusp of total disaster. Still, you should promptly get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that the problem can be pinpointed and addressed before it gets worse and costs more to fix. At Jake’s Auto Repair, we provide expert check engine light diagnostics and repair in the greater Phoenix area.

Common Problems that Trigger the Check Engine Light

Problems with certain sensors often trigger check engine lights. A failing oxygen sensor can cause the light to turn on. With a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, symptoms may arise such as misfiring and rough idling. A bad MAF sensor can also cause the light to illuminate. With a bad MAF sensor, you may notice poor acceleration and dark exhaust smoke.

A bad catalytic converter is another common check engine light trigger. Warning signs of a faulty catalytic converter include worsening acceleration, decreasing fuel-efficiency, and a sulfurous smell. Your catalytic converter helps to ensure that your car is minimally polluting, so any problems with it should be addressed ASAP.

Faulty spark plugs can also trigger the light. Signs of bad spark plugs include misfiring and rough idling. Malfunctioning ignition coils can cause the light to turn on as well, and may lead to power loss, misfiring, and hard starts.

With an illuminated check engine light, a bad battery is another potential culprit. A faulty battery may cause low voltage at the computer, which can then trigger the check engine light.

Also, while it might seem a little strange, a loose/missing gas cap can potentially cause the light to come on. It’s important that your gas cap remains tightly fastened. Otherwise, fuel could evaporate before it is directed to your engine.
