Because a faulty suspension can cause your car to handle unsafely, it’s important to get to the shop at the first indication of a problem. At Jake’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics are highly experienced with suspension repair in the greater Phoenix, AZ area.

Warning Signs of Suspension Failure

Signs of suspension trouble sometimes arise while braking. With a bad suspension, it may feel like your car is lunging forward at a downward trajectory when the brakes are engaged. Also, if your suspension is in rough shape, then your vehicle may take more time to arrive at a complete stop after you’ve begun braking.

Another sign of a suspension problem is that your vehicle starts bouncing excessively when it goes over any little rough patch of road. And if you hear clunking sounds when going over bumps, then you could be dealing with a bad spring. A failing spring could also cause your car to slouch in one corner.

There’s a simple test you can do to get a better sense of whether your suspension is in poor shape. To conduct this test, you should first make sure that your car is securely parked in a level area and won’t roll. Then go to the front end, press strongly down on it, rock it twice, and let go. Then go to the car’s rear and repeat this process on the back end. After you release, your car shouldn’t rock more than three times on its own. But if it does, then you could have a faulty suspension.

It’s important to be familiar with a few other common warning signs of a bad suspension. A faulty suspension could cause your tire tread to wear down unevenly, leading to the formation of bald spots on your tires. And if your suspension isn’t working properly, then it could feel as though your car is drifting when you take sharp turns. Also, if there’s oil leaking out onto your shocks, then it’s probably time to replace them.
