5 Indications of Cooling System Trouble We Can Fix at Our Phoenix Auto Shop

Jake’s Auto Repair • 14 February 2023

Overheating can cause major engine problems, including a cracked block. So it’s very important that your vehicle’s cooling system is working optimally. Basic cooling system parts include water pumps, thermostats, radiators, cooling fans, and hoses. When you first suspect a problem with any cooling system component, you’ll want to make it a priority to get to the shop for an inspection. At Jake’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics provide top-quality cooling system repair in the greater Phoenix, AZ area. Here are five signs of a cooling system problem.

White Exhaust Smoke

If you have an internal coolant leak, a lot of white smoke may come out of your exhaust pipe. This is a symptom of a blown head gasket.

External Coolant Leak

If you’re dealing with an external coolant leak, the bright fluid may be noticeable on the pavement below your car. Although coolant is often green, yours may be a different color such as yellow, orange, or pink.

High Reading on Temperature Gauge

It’s important to keep an eye on your dashboard temperature gauge. If it climbs into the red, then you should pull into a parking lot as soon as you safely get the chance. At that point, you can give the shop a call and describe what’s happening. Then you can get guidance on if it seems fine to continue operating your vehicle at all—-or if it would be smarter to get towed to the shop to prevent any risk of serious engine damage.

Low Coolant Level

If your coolant level has suddenly gotten quite low, then you may have a leak in your cooling system. One common location of coolant leaks is at the radiator pan gasket.

Steam Emerging from Under Hood

When coolant is leaking, fluid pressure can drop, in turn causing a reduction in your coolant’s boiling point. As a result, steam might start billowing out from beneath your hood.
